Bluegrouse. Capital B. One word. Like the bird. Dendragapus Obscurus. The name is confusing, purposely directing one to think of bluegrass music, but skirting around the genre ever so slightly. Fitting for a band that considers themselves more Bluegrass-adjacent than bluegrass-purist. Each of these talented grouses has been part of the Durango music scene since the early 2000’s, playing in multiple bands and joining in weekly jam groups. But like birds of a feather, they found each other and settled in to create this band, Bluegrouse. Borrowing from diverse musical backgrounds, Bluegrouse blends simple instrumentation with beautifully crafted vocal harmonies to create a collection of songs that reflects their wide ranging musical tastes, including bluegrass, traditional, folk, swing, country and celtic music. Playing innovative arrangements of cover songs, and several new originals, the band has something for everyone to love. Bluegrouse has been wowing audiences in the Four Corners region since 2015, playing festivals, house concerts, radio stations, fundraisers, breweries, cideries, and other varied music venues from Flagstaff to Denver, with stops in Salt Lake City and many towns in between. Their most recent festival appearances include the Durango Bluegrass Meltdown, where they are a repeat annual act since 2022, and New Mexico’s Tico Time Bluegrass Festival, on the bank of the beautiful Animas River. Their undeniable natural chemistry and fun-loving, playful energy make their performances unforgettable. The lineup features Carol Calkin (fiddle/vocals), Laurie Swisher (guitar/vocals), Jonti Fox (bass/vocals), and Jess Wilton (mandolin/vocals/harmonica).
